TRTP – The Richards Trauma Process
Change the impact of the past
TRTP follows a structured three-step process that works with the patterns, beliefs and emotional responses shaped by past experiences, without requiring repeated detailed retelling or reliving of distressing events.
Explore the approach for yourself or learn how to bring it into your professional practice.

What is TRTP?
A structured process. An individual approach
Distressing experiences can leave more than memories. They can contribute to ongoing anxiety, depression and overwhelm. In the TRTP approach, the focus is on the emotional responses and underlying beliefs associated with those experiences – and how they continue to affect the present.
TRTP follows a structured three-step process designed to change the ongoing impact of past experiences, without requiring repeated detailed retelling or reliving of distressing events.
A clear structure. Three connected steps, delivered in a defined sequence.
Individualised work. The work is shaped around the person, their experiences and their goals.
A focus on resolution. The aim is to resolve the continuing emotional impact of past experiences and address what is driving the presenting issue – not just manage its symptoms.
Exploring TRTP for yourself
Find a TRTP practitioner
You do not need to have it all figured out before taking the next step
You may be experiencing anxiety, depression, persistent overwhelm or emotional reactions that feel difficult to change. You may be living with the effects of significant trauma or PTSD. Or you may recognise patterns in your relationships, confidence or sense of self that keep returning.
You do not need to decide whether the word “trauma” fits before learning about TRTP.
Explore what the process involves, then speak with a practitioner about your situation and whether TRTP is appropriate for you.

TRTP practitioner training
When clients remain stuck in recurring patterns of response
You may work with clients who can explain their difficulties clearly, recognise their patterns and engage thoughtfully in therapy – yet continue to experience the same emotional, behavioural and physiological responses.
TRTP training teaches a structured, resolution-focused process for working with trauma-related distress, alongside your existing professional skills.
Explore the TRTP approach, what you will learn, the support available and the pathway from training to TRTP practitioner certification.
TRTP research and evidence
TRTP’s developing evidence base includes a published feasibility study and a separate practice-based outcomes report. The research is at an early stage, with larger controlled studies needed to establish effectiveness.
Explore the findings, how the research was conducted and what it means for the next stages of investigation.
